The doors and windows were locked, so the students were trapped. 19 people died, and 9 victims are in the hospital. All but one of the victims of the fire were indigenous people between the ages of 12 and 18 from remote villages. The five-year-old son of the head of the dormitory also died in the fire. The panicked woman could not find the key to unlock the building and free the children. The schoolgirl suspected of arson received burns and was also hospitalized. The schoolgirl is scheduled to be released from the hospital this week and held in a juvenile detention facility. The government also plans to press charges against the man with whom the suspect had a relationship, since she is not yet 16 years old. The United States will send teams of American forensic scientists and other experts to Guyana to assist in the investigation.
