30 percent of Russians do not have children because of war, anxiety and poverty
Almost a third of Russians (30.6%) refused to have a previously planned child, according to the results of a study by the National Research University “Higher School of Economics”.
The main reasons, according to the study, are the war with Ukraine, the “political situation” within Russia, financial problems and emotional tension.
The day before, it was reported that Rosstat recorded a record drop in the birth rate in Russia. At the beginning of the summer of this year, the number of newborns fell to 98.6 thousand: before this indicator was never below 100 thousand.
At the same time, the statistical office reported a sharp increase in natural population decline: in the first half of 2024, it amounted to 321,500 people, which is 49,000 more than in the same period last year.
Russian authorities, including President Vladimir Putin, regularly declare a serious demographic problem in the country, trying to increase the birth rate by financially stimulating future mothers, fighting abortion and LGBT.
On Tuesday, another statement regarding the problem was made in the State Duma. CPRF deputy Irina Filatova proposed to increase the birth rate by teaching citizens “moral, ethical and religious frameworks”. “Money is not the key to population reproduction,” she said, adding that “it is unacceptable to replace traditional values with consumerism, self-development, cats and dogs.”
