A law banning foreign words in documents comes into force in Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law prohibiting the use of foreign words in those cases when the language is used as a state language. The exceptions are only those words that have no analogues in Russian.

The document was posted on Tuesday on the official Internet portal of legal information.

Amendments are made to the law “On State Language”. According to the authors of the changes, they are designed to protect the Russian language from foreign borrowings. A list of foreign words that do not have analogues will be given in special dictionaries. Dictionaries and reference books will be approved by the government based on the proposals of the commission on the Russian language, Kommersant notes.

In mid-February, the draft law was adopted by the State Duma in the second and third readings. The first reading was in December. In the explanatory note to the document, it was said that the adoption of such a law would complete “the legal establishment of the status of the Russian language as the state language”, writes RBC.
