Canada, Australia, Germany and the Netherlands plan to file a case with the United Nations International Court of Justice against the Taliban over gender discrimination.
This is the first such case in history informs The Guardian.
The countries announced their decision at the UN General Assembly.
The case will be brought under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, which entered into force in 1981. Afghanistan ratified it in 2003.
The country is expected to have six months to respond before the UN International Court of Justice holds a hearing and is likely to offer interim measures.
Supporters of this move believe that even if the Taliban refuses to recognize the court’s authority, its decision will deter other states that seek to normalize diplomatic relations with the Taliban.
However, there is concern that the UN has already held talks with the Taliban in which women’s rights have been left off the agenda. This was done in order to convince representatives of the Taliban to attend the event.
The initiative to bring the Taliban to court was supported by four foreign ministers: Penny Wong from Australia, Annalena Berbock from Germany, Melanie Jolie from Canada and Caspar Veldkamp from the Netherlands.
Countries that plan to take part in the trial say they are ready for “good faith negotiations” with the Taliban to end gender discrimination. But if they turn out to be fruitless, they will turn to the UN International Court of Justice.
This week, actress Meryl Streep, together with Afghan activists and human rights defenders, called on the UN to take measures to protect and restore women’s rights in Afghanistan
“A cat has more freedom than a woman. A cat can sit on the porch and feel the sun on its face. It can chase a squirrel in the park.
A squirrel has more rights than a girl in Afghanistan today because public parks are closed to women and girls by the Taliban. A bird can sing in Kabul, but a girl can’t.” – emphasized the actress.
It will be recalled that the Taliban banned Afghan women study at universities, do sports, visit amusement parks. Also, it cannot be shown in the country series and movies with women and all closed beauty salons.
In addition, the Taliban banned Afghan women to work in UN institutions.
Women who have become victims of violence in Afghanistan are sent to prison
The Taliban recently passed lawwhich obliges Afghan women to completely cover their bodies and faces. Besides, from now on they can’t even talk on the street.
