A monument to veterans of the Korean War of 1950-1953 was opened in the Buryat village of Kalenovo, reports the regional office of “Battle Brotherhood”. It is claimed that this is the first similar monument in Russia.

A commemorative plaque with three names was installed on the monument in honor of the participants of the Great Patriotic War. The participants of the war “are an example of heroism, bravery and devotion to serving the interests of the Great Country,” the message says. As “Vesty-Buryatia” reports, 516 residents of Buryatia participated in the Korean War. “For the first time, such a monument has been installed here in Buryatia and in Russia as a whole. This is a truly historical event,” said regional historian Ochir Tsybykov.

  • The war between North and South Korea took place from 1950 to 1953 after the invasion of North Korean troops in the south of the peninsula. The hostilities ended with a truce, but the peace treaty has still not been signed. On the side of South Korea, the US army and its allies took part in the war, on the side of North Korea – the USSR and the People’s Republic of China. The participation of Soviet troops was classified until 1995, the Soviet military participated in the conflict under the guise of “Chinese volunteers.” In particular, in 1950, the Soviet 64th fighter air corps was introduced to Korea. It performed the functions of air defense – it covered cities, military, industrial and transport facilities from air attacks.
