A mother whose 4-month-old child was admitted to the hospital with a very low weight was tried in the Lviv region

In the Lviv region, a woman was tried, whose 4-month-old son was admitted to intensive care with a weight of 2.7 kg, while the norm is 6-7 kg. This is reported by Zaxid.net with reference to the court decision. The Zhovkiv District Court of the Lviv Region considered the claim of an unemployed woman with a disability. Her 4-month-old son needed special care due to his diagnosed diseases. The case file states that the child was born prematurely with severe weight loss and cachexia (general atrophy). Also, the child did not have proper living conditions and medical support. In January 2023, with the participation of the police, a boy was hospitalized in the Lviv hospital “Okhmatdit” with a critically low body weight – 2700 g. The child’s body weight deficit was 44.4% of the appropriate one. At the age of 1 to 4 months, the boy steadily weighed 2.9 kg (30.8% of the norm). Upon admission to the hospital, the child was cold, dirty, with a swollen crown and peeling skin on the chest and back. The court ruled that the baby’s mother is guilty of maliciously failing to fulfill parental responsibilities to care for the child. The woman herself fully admitted her guilt. She said that during her pregnancy she was not on the medical record because she did not know what the child was expecting. On the day she gave birth, she was at work. The woman’s stomach started to hurt badly, an ambulance was called. She thought she had appendicitis. However, in the hospital, the woman gave birth to a son without complications. She says that she immediately registered with a surgeon and a pediatrician. The woman claimed that she went to the pediatrician every week and told the doctor that her son was not gaining weight, but she allegedly did not remember when it was. The woman does not understand why her child was taken away from her. She says that she tried to provide her son with everything he needed: he fed every three hours and heated the room. However, the defendant admitted that when the police came to her with a representative of the children’s affairs service, she was intoxicated. She also noted that she often drank alcohol when she was nursing her son. Currently, she is undergoing treatment and claims that she does not drink alcohol, “feels very well and can fulfill all her duties of raising her son.” According to her, a roommate and the headman of the village in which she lives helps with money and food. The court also released a video recording the family’s living conditions. The child’s crying can be heard on the recording, and it is also seen that the mother gives her son a bottle of cold porridge and assures the investigator that the child does not eat warm food. The judge sentenced the woman to two years in prison, but released her from serving the sentence with a two-year probationary period on the condition that she does not commit a new crime and fulfills her duties. The verdict can still be appealed. The court case does not say where the child’s father is.
