In the Krasnodar region, the court arrested pensioner Olga Shkyriatova for 15 days. According to law enforcement officers, she tried to paint Z symbols on posters on the streets of Uspenskoe village. He was charged with an article about disobeying the demands of police officers.

Shkyriatova’s arrest was reported to OVD-Info by her daughter.

The Latin letter Z is an unofficial, but widely used in Russia, symbol of support for the military invasion of Ukraine. It is used to mark Russian military equipment, as well as on posters, in monumental propaganda and at events of solidarity with the Kremlin policy. The symbol was repeatedly used at actions in support of the war, including with the participation of children. The letter Z was painted on the doors of the apartments of those who oppose the war in Ukraine. Z was even placed on a chicken fillet.

  • For the “desecration” of the symbol Z in Russia, administrative sentences have been issued repeatedly. As a rule, they were issued under articles of discrediting the Russian army, as well as hooliganism and vandalism.
  • In May 2022, the Ministry of Defense of Russia reported that the letters Z and V – originally tactical signs that denoted the Russian equipment participating in the invasion – are not recognized as official military symbols and do not carry a special burden.
