On the website of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, a petition was registered on the introduction of separate carriages for women and men in “Ukrzaliznytsia” trains. The petition was published on May 15. As of May 19, 12:20 p.m., more than 9,500 Ukrainians have signed it, according to information on the Cabinet of Ministers website. In the description of the petition, the author Olga Ozhogina calls for separate carriages for men and women in trains that follow a route longer than six hours. “On long routes, when there is a need to sleep in compartment or reserved carriages, passengers may feel discomfort due to passengers of the opposite sex,” the text of the petition reads. There were even cases of rape in compartment cars. Ozhogina adds that, among other things, inconvenience may arise when changing clothes in shared carriages – both for women and for men. Previously, discussions about the need for separate carriages for women and men also arose in social networks. On Twitter, users picked up the discussion of the idea of creating separate compartments for women, which began with a post by a user with the nickname “Unamanuna”, who expressed emotion about being in the same compartment with three men. In the comments, the opinions of users were divided, and people also began to tell their own stories about harassment on trains, in particular in the compartment. “I will never forget my experience with one man to whom I never gave my number,” wrote a user with the nickname “…snek”. Some women admit that they do not feel safe in a compartment exclusively with men. Some men supported them, noting that they sometimes find themselves in uncomfortable situations. Others did not support the girl. At the same time, some of them believe that women should not feel unsafe in the company of unfamiliar men. It will be recalled that until 2015, the transport police patrolled the trains of “Ukrzaliznytsia”.
