A shipwreck over 150 years old was discovered in the USA

In Lake Michigan, Wisconsin, researchers discovered a ship with fragments of dishes that sank in 1881. This is reported by The New York Times. The ship was built in 1867. It was used for grain trade on the Great Lakes. The wreck was discovered by shipwreck researchers Brandon Baillod and Robert Jack at a depth of about 82 meters – 10 miles off the coast of Algoma, Wisconsin. After construction, sailors used it to transport cargo between Milwaukee, Chicago and Oswego, New York. “A lot of these schooners were built for one thing. And that was to make millionaires,” Baillod said. It is currently known that the owners did not maintain this vessel well. Therefore, “Trinidad” suffered from constant leaks. Captain Higgins reportedly grounded this boat in Port Huron midway through the trip because he didn’t believe it would survive an autumn storm. He waited until spring to continue sailing. It was during this journey that the ship began to take on water, and later sank. The captain and the crew survived. The researchers decided to find this artifact, because Captain Higgins provided detailed information about the place where the ship was last located. With the help of sonar, they discovered the ship. To determine if it was the same vessel, Baillod and Jack contacted Wisconsin Historical Society underwater archaeologist Tamara Thomsen, who thoroughly surveyed the site. “We were stunned to see that not only was the wheelhouse still on it, but all the cupboards with all the crockery stacked in them and all the crew’s belongings,” Mr Baylod concluded. Baylod hopes to have the wreckage added to the National Register of Historic Places next year. We previously reported that a shipwreck was found near the Philippines that transported prisoners during the Second World War.
