A suspect in the killing of reindeer was detained on Sakhalin

On Sakhalin, a 42-year-old resident of the city of Okha, suspected of illegal hunting of red-book reindeer, was detained. This is reported by the administration of the SC in the Sakhalin region.

As a result of the searches, more than 10 snowmobiles, snowmobiles, weapons and ammunition intended for hunting wild animals were seized from residents of Uglegorsk and Okha. In addition, SC employees found caches and refrigeration units in which there were bags of deer carcasses.

On February 25, it became known that 26 reindeer were killed in the north of Sakhalin, including pregnant females – the remains were discovered by local residents. According to eyewitnesses, poachers drove deer on snowmobiles. Illegal hunting with the use of snowmobiles is punishable by a fine of up to one million rubles or up to five years in prison.

About 900,000 reindeer live in Russia (about 2,000 on Sakhalin), and their number has decreased by 40% over the past decade. The main reason for population decline is hunting and poaching.
