Almost 59% of refugee children in the EU continue their education in Ukrainian schools – survey

Almost two-thirds of refugee children who are temporarily in the countries of the European Union study online in Ukrainian schools and universities. This is evidenced by the survey conducted by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Human Rights (FRA). Less than half of the respondents (43%) who studied at the time of leaving Ukraine continued their studies in schools and universities of another country. Most of those who did not study in local educational institutions (74%) answered that they had already completed their studies at the time of the survey. The second biggest reason was not knowing the language (19%). The level of mastery of the local language The highest percentage of those who went to study in local schools is among children aged 12-15: 92% and 73% – 16-17 years old. At the same time, two-thirds of children (59%) study online in Ukrainian schools or study independently using Ukrainian textbooks. Only 10% of all respondents speak the local language well or excellently. A quarter do not speak the local language at all. However, this indicator varies greatly between countries: from 12% in Poland to 65% in Estonia. We will remind, according to the results of the same survey, only every third Ukrainian who is temporarily in European countries because of the war wants to return home. There are more people who plan to stay abroad. The EU Agency for Fundamental Human Rights (FRA) conducted a survey in EU countries. The survey covered refugees in 10 EU member states (Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Spain, Estonia). 14,685 respondents took part in the survey. The vast majority of respondents are women aged 18-64 (87%). Men of this age made up only 8% of respondents. The sample also included children aged 12-17 (2%) and respondents aged 65+ (3%).
