Another Novosibirsk scientist was suspected of treason

Valery Zvegintsev – the founder of the Laboratory “Aerogas Dynamics of High Speeds” of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences – became a suspect in the case of high treason. This became known from the open letter of the employees of the institute.

The authors of the appeal remind that in the last hour, three scientists – “aerodynamics” Anatoly Maslov, Alexander Shiplyuk and Valery Zvegintsev – were arrested on charges of treason. The date and circumstances of Zvegintsev’s arrest are unknown. The “NGS” portal reports that the scientist was arrested on April 7.

The letter emphasizes that all the arrested scientists are known for their “brilliant scientific results”, dedicated their lives to the service of Russian science and “always remained loyal to the interests of the country” and are not capable of doing what the investigative bodies suspect them of.

The authors of the appeal note that, against the background of the actions of the investigators, critically important areas of research necessary for the creation of new technology are already being closed, because the employees are afraid to engage in such research. What is happening threatens domestic aerodynamics with a catastrophe.

In 2001, Valery Zvegintsev founded the “Aerogas Dynamics of High Speeds” laboratory, and before that his team was engaged in the creation of the AT-303 adiabatic compression wind tunnel. In 2006, Alexander Shiplyuk replaced Zvegintsev as the head of the laboratory, who later headed the institute.

  • The chief researcher of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Anatoly Maslov, and the director of the same institute, Alexander Shiplyuk, were detained in 2022. They were taken to Moscow’s “Lefortovo” pre-trial detention center. The day before, the case of 76-year-old Maslov came to the court of St. Petersburg.
  • At the end of June 2022, Novosibirsk physicist Dmitry Kolker was arrested on suspicion of treason. The scientist was taken from the hospital with the fourth stage of pancreatic cancer. Three days after the arrest, Kolker’s relatives received a telegram about his death. The main military investigation department of the SC found no signs of a crime in the death of the arrested Novosibirsk scientist Dmitry Kolker, according to the results of the department’s investigation.
  • Since the beginning of 2023, at least 21 criminal cases have been opened in Russia under the article of treason. This is five times more than in the same period last year. For the whole of 2022, 22 criminal cases of state treason were initiated.
  • Recently, the punishment under this article was toughened – now the courts can impose up to life imprisonment on charges of treason.
