How pictures with “military” based on artificial intelligence on Facebook help Russia
Examples of dangerous viral posts
CPD
Often on Facebook and other social networks you can see posts with “photos” allegedly of Ukrainian military personnel, who ask to congratulate them on their birthday or on their wedding.
For the most part, such posts use pictures generated by artificial intelligence (that’s why people in the “photo” can have 6 fingers on their hands). Sometimes they even take photos of the Russian occupiers for these posts.
Despite the fact that the photo is fake, such posts get a lot of likes and reposts. However, the distribution of such content is harmful and may even help Russia in information warfare.
In the Center for Combating Disinformation explainedwhy interactions with viral AI images are not worth it and how they are used by the aggressor country.
“In the Ukrainian segment of social networks, a large number of posts are spreading, which contain photos with clear signs of generation by artificial intelligence of allegedly Ukrainian military personnel, with calls to congratulate them either on their birthday or on their wedding. There are also similar posts about rescued animals, children or elderly people .
Posts like this are often shared by bots, their goal is to evoke emotion and encourage people to react. In this way, these images receive thousands of interactions from real users, which contributes to the rapid promotion of pages.”– they say in the CPD.
According to experts, Russia can use such pages in social networks to spread disinformation.
The danger of such posts is that they can be used for fraud, because they often contain harmful links, disguised, for example, as a petition that needs to be signed.
“A large audience gathers on the pages with AI images, which is not overly critical of what it sees online and is susceptible to information manipulation. In this way, the enemy gets a platform to promote narratives that are dangerous for Ukraine.”– explains TsPD.
The department urged to observe information hygiene in the network and not to be manipulated.
“UP. Life” collected several examples of viral posts with fake photos or AI pictures, which are actually manipulative and false.
We will remind you that earlier we explained how to protect yourself from fraud on the Internet and which links should not be opened.
The CPD also refuted a fake propaganda video about a doctor at the site of the Russian attack on “Okhmatdyt”.
