Hurricane Helen unleashed floods in the United States, killing at least 35 people

Hurricane Helen continues to rage in the USA. According to the Associated Press, at least 35 people have become victims of the natural disaster. The hurricane is most active in the south-east of the country. It causes massive destruction. Many trees were uprooted, the roofs of private houses were blown off by the wind.

The hurricane is assigned the fourth category of danger on the five-point Saffir-Simpson scale. Wind gusts reach 225 kilometers per hour. The governor of the state of Georgia, Brian Kemp, said that dozens of people remain in destroyed houses, and rescue services are trying to free them.

The hurricane caused severe flooding in the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The National Hurricane Center called them “unprecedented and catastrophic.” The authorities of the states affected by the bad weather attracted the rescue services and the National Guard to help the population. About four thousand National Guardsmen, 450 special vehicles, as well as helicopters and boats participate in rescue operations. Residents were warned that an urgent evacuation may be necessary.

Because of the hurricane and the flood, the life support system failed. At the moment, more than 4.6 million residential houses and commercial premises are cut off from the electricity supply. In some settlements, residents try to wait out the natural disaster on the roofs of flooded houses.

Hurricane Helen became the seventh strongest in Florida and the 14th strongest in the United States in the history of observation. It threatens not only the well-being of people, but also the cotton and pecan crops grown in the affected states.

  • Due to the increase in global temperature, floods, droughts, forest fires, storms, cold and heat waves occur more often and become more intense. Natural disasters lead to the death and migration of people and animals, the destruction of houses and infrastructure, and the destruction of land plots.
