“I thought that my legs were torn off”: the story of the rescue of a soldier who was injured in Donetsk region

In Lviv, medics operated and removed a military fragment from his back that immobilized his legs. Currently, the man is learning to walk again, reports the First Medical Association of Lviv. Before the full-scale war, 36-year-old Nazar Martyn worked as a construction worker. The man is married and has two twin daughters. After that, the man fell down and realized that he couldn’t feel anything below the waist. Nazar recalls that at first he thought that his legs had been torn off, but then he realized that he could not feel his lower limbs. From the last of these, a wounded man crawled towards the trench in his arms. The hospital says that it was impossible to provide first aid to the man, because then an enemy drone appeared over the soldier and started dropping grenades. “I just clenched my teeth and prayed,” Nazar recalls. The man lay there for 16 hours, until his comrades came to his aid, who then dragged him to the evacuation point for another 4 hours. There, the wounded soldier was handed over to paramedics. The wounded soldier was first taken to Dnipro, where he underwent a series of operations. Later, Nazar was sent to Lviv for treatment. Doctors found out that as a result of the explosion, a shrapnel hit the spine, immobilizing the soldier’s legs. “The doctors thought that it would take months for the man to be able to sit. But he took it and sat down the very next day after the operation on the spine. And soon he was even walking on crutches,” the hospital says. Currently, Nazar is undergoing rehabilitation and covers a distance of 4,000 steps every day. A military man dreams of returning to the construction profession.
