Unknown works of the 17th century Dutch master Rembrandt were accidentally discovered in the private collection of a family from Great Britain. The Financial Times writes about it. As reported in the publication, two rare portraits of Rembrandt’s work were discovered by Christie’s auction house experts while evaluating the works kept by the British family. The paintings are dated 1635. They belong to the period when Rembrandt already had a reputation as a sought-after artist. Two portraits depict distant relatives of the artist – Jan Willems van der Pluim and his wife Japgen Karels. The ancestors of the family in which the painting was discovered and which is not named at Christie’s, bought a pair of small oil paintings in 1824 at the same auction. The record for Rembrandt at Christie’s auction was set in 2009, when “Portrait of a Man with Outstretched Hands” was sold for 20.2 million pounds (approximately UAH 930 million). Christie’s also sells paintings by contemporary artists. Thus, an untitled work by the American abstract artist Cy Twombly was sold in 2022 for $46.4 million at Christie’s in New York. A work written in 2005, it is considered one of the last truly valuable works of the artist, before the artist’s death in 2011. Last year, it was included in the list of the most expensive paintings and works of art in the world. Read UP. Culture in Telegram
