In Ivano-Frankivsk, a masseuse who set a client on fire during a vacuum massage was put on trial. The victim died from her burns, and the woman was tried for negligent homicide. This is stated in the decision of the Ivano-Frankivsk City Court. The masseuse rented the premises of the office, which she arranged for the provision of therapeutic massage services, and received clients who approached her independently. The tragic incident occurred during a massage on May 20, 2022. During a vacuum massage using glass jars and fire, the masseuse accidentally spilled alcohol-containing substances on the woman’s naked body. The substances ignited instantly from an open fire source. According to the medical examiner’s report, death was caused by thermal burns of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degrees of the skin of the back, abdomen, left arm, left leg, with a total area of ​​30% of the body surface. The woman also developed a burn disease in the stage of toxemia, which was complicated by multiple organ failure. The masseuse was tried under Part 1 of Article 119 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (murder committed due to carelessness). She admitted her guilt and “repented of what she had done.” “The court recognizes the sincere remorse of the accused, active assistance in the detection of the criminal offense and voluntary compensation for the damage caused as mitigating circumstances,” the court case states. At the same time, the court did not find any aggravating circumstances. The woman was found guilty of committing a criminal offense provided for in Part 1 of Article 119 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and initially sentenced to 3 years in prison. However, on the basis of Art. 75 of the Criminal Code, the masseuse was released from prison, having been placed on probation for one year. “According to Part 2 of Article 50 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the purpose of punishment is not only punishment, but also the correction of convicts, as well as the prevention of committing new criminal offenses by both convicts and other persons,” the verdict reads. The accused will be obliged to periodically appear for registration with the authorized body on probation issues, to notify about the change of place of residence and work.
