In March, Ukraine could receive about half a billion hryvnias from the export of electricity – Gerus

Thanks to the surplus capacity in the power system, Ukraine could receive about UAH 500 million from the export of electricity, but such export has so far been stopped.

This EP is about told Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy and Housing and Communal Services Andrii Gerus.

“We can now, in my opinion, resume the export of electricity, because we have a surplus at night and during the day. Maybe it would be a little more difficult for us to export in the morning and in the evening, because there are peaks of consumption, but at night and during the day we have there is enough electricity for us – and there is still a surplus for export,” he said.

According to Gerus, there may be speculations on the topic of electricity export, when there is no electricity in certain settlements or districts due to repairs or damage to the network.

“If the country really does not have enough electricity, then it is not possible to export. If there is enough electricity in the country, but there is no electricity in a separate town or village due to damage to the network, this is not a reason for not resuming exports. Because even if exports do not go away, the light is there will not appear until the networks are repaired,” said the head of the Energy Committee of the Republic of Belarus.

At the same time, selling electricity for export and receiving funds from it can be a resource for restoring the power system, in particular – networks and substations.

Gerus noted that since the beginning of March, Ukraine has produced a surplus of electricity that could be exported.

It is difficult to calculate exactly how much Ukraine could earn from exporting electricity during this time, because market participants themselves decide whether it is worth exporting or importing it. “But I think we could have earned up to 500 million hryvnias in March if we had exported,” said the People’s Deputy.
