In the American state of Minnesota, the governor signed a bill on the legalization of recreational marijuana for people over 21 years old. Minnesota has become the 23rd US state to allow the use of the substance by adults, according to the Associated Press. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a Democrat, signed the bill surrounded by dozens of green-clad supporters of legalization. According to the new law, from August 1, 2023, it will be possible to store, use and grow cannabis at home. Hemp storage will be limited to 0.9 kilograms at home, and 56 grams will be allowed in public places. Retail drugstore sales are likely at least a year away. Minnesotans convicted of cultivation and possession will receive amnesty. Those who have grown and possessed marijuana in larger quantities than this law allows can apply for a reduced sentence. However, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation has estimated that all cases will continue until August next year. Supporters of the law argue that it will improve public health and safety and enhance social justice, while opponents argue that public health and safety will suffer. Supporters of the law are mainly Democrats, and opponents – Republicans. After the Democrats came to power in Minnesota, they passed a long list of legislative priorities, including the legalization of marijuana. Last year, the legislature passed a bill to legalize THC in edible or drinkable form, if it is derived from hemp. Thus, chewing candies and drinks with marijuana appeared on sale. We will remind, in Ukraine parliamentarians have still not passed the law on the legalization of medical cannabis.
