Acting vice-governors Elena Egorova and Tatiana Kuleshova were detained in the Bryansk region on Wednesday. They are suspected of receiving bribes in person on a large scale. The amount of bribes amounted to 4.4 million rubles. The money was transferred through intermediaries, who are also detained.

Elena Egorova oversees educational and cultural issues in her position. Tatiana Kuleshova also deals with issues of education and culture, as well as internal and information policy.

Earlier, mass media also reported on the detention of the third deputy governor of the region, Mykola Simonenko. Symonenko oversees construction issues. Telegram channel Mash, which reported on his detention, suggested that the claims against him may be related to the construction of the so-called “slash line” – a line of fortifications on the border with Ukraine. The total cost of the works can reach 143 million rubles. However, the press service of the regional government denied this information, saying that Symonenko continues to fulfill his duties.

  • The construction of fortifications was carried out to prevent saboteurs from Ukraine from entering the territory of the region. However, on March 2, two villages in the border region of the Bryansk region were under the control of armed detachments that crossed the Ukrainian-Russian border. The responsibility was taken by the so-called Russian volunteer corps – an armed formation of Russian emigrants of far-right views, fighting on the side of Ukraine.
  • Representatives of the Ukrainian authorities denythat Kyiv has something to do with what happened in the Bryansk region, calling it an internal struggle of “partisans” in Russia.
