Most parents of high school students would like schools to provide a free choice of subjects for students.

This option received the most votes (50%) during the survey of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology and the Ministry of Education and Culture about the attitude of parents to the reforms.

Also, parents of 10-11th graders want their children to be taught what will be needed in real life (48%), and they also ask to modernize classrooms and laboratories (46%).

In addition to desired changes in schools, sociologists asked parents about the biggest problems in education. Parents complained about the following shortcomings:

  • the child is overloaded with lessons and homework – 17%;
  • teachers teach as before – 15%;
  • training not focused on practice – 15%;
  • textbooks are difficult and uninteresting – 12%;
  • unclear evaluation system – 12%;
  • the space at the school has not improved (furniture, equipment, educational materials, etc. have not been purchased) – 9%;
  • teachers do not respect children (may shout, insult, etc.) – 8%;
  • there is bullying at school – 7%;
  • the child is bored at school – 6%.

At the same time, 43% of respondents did not choose anything from the list.

KMIS

According to the results of the survey, a significant number of parents are forced to send their children to tutors – half of the surveyed high school students use their services.

43% of them explain this by the fact that studying at school is not enough for admission to universities, and they feel the need for a tutor. At the same time, 7% refer to the decision of parents who consider schooling insufficient.

KMIS specialists also asked schoolchildren and students what changes they would like. The most common wishes of high school students are:

  • to acquire skills that will be needed in life – 67%;
  • choose subjects/courses independently – 63%;
  • reduce the number of items – 57%;
  • to study only those subjects that one likes – 54%;
  • to modernize classrooms and laboratories – 53%.

And students of professional technical schools or institutions of professional preliminary higher education want:

  • study more practice, less theory – 52%;
  • to modernize classrooms/laboratories/workshops – 48%;
  • to have a place for rest or self-training – 40%.

We will remind, earlier in KMIS determined how the parents of schoolchildren relate to the reform of the specialized school, 12-year education and other innovations.
