In the Moscow region, migrants will be prohibited from working in the service sector

From the new year, the authorities of the Moscow Region will prohibit migrants from many types of activities on the territory of the region.

“From January 1, a ban on attracting foreign labor under patents in the areas of alcohol and tobacco trade, street food in non-stationary trade facilities, social services, as well as sports, culture, leisure, health care and education will come into effect,” – says the press release government services.

Deputy Prime Minister Natalya Maslyonkina, commenting on the decision, said that it was motivated by the increased number of local residents’ complaints about the work of foreigners and should contribute to the “minimization of potential conflicts.” In the future, according to Maslyonkina, the Moscow region “would like to join the 22 regions of Russia that have introduced a complete ban on patent work.”

An earlier edition of “Agentstvo” calculated that restrictions on the work of migrants have been introduced in a third of Russian regions. Most often, visitors are prohibited from working in taxis. Because of this, according to the forecast of Anton Petrakov, one of the managers of the “Yandex Go” service, the deficit of taxi drivers in Russia will be 130 thousand people by the end of 2024. According to him, transportation prices may increase by “tens of percent”.

  • After the terrorist attack in the concert hall “Crocus City Hall”, as a result of which 145 people died and more than 550 were injured, xenophobic sentiments towards migrants intensified in Russia. In different regions of the country, law enforcement agencies have begun conducting raids on the places of residence and service of foreign workers. Since the beginning of 2024, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has expelled more than 65 thousand foreign citizens from the country, and also closed the entry for 120 thousand people. The flow of migrants to Russia fell to a 10-year low, which, according to economists, could seriously exacerbate the country’s personnel crisis.
