In the state of Missouri (USA), the details of the murder of 29-year-old Jimmy Wade Martin, which happened 35 years ago, were revealed. The podcast “Forgotten Small Town” created by the murdered man’s daughters, Angela and Andrea, helped to find the suspect.
As informs CNN, a tragic event occurred on the night of October 13, 1989. Then Jimmy went for a drink at the local tavern and never came home.
The man’s bloody body was discovered before dawn on a nearby street. According to authorities, the cause of death was a blow to the head that Martin received during a bar fight.
The suspect in the murder was arrested, but later released – the charges were dropped from him a few days before the trial. Years have passed since then and the case was “frozen”.
When Angela and Andrea, Martin’s daughters, grew up, they appealed to the local authorities to reopen the case, but received no response. They also begged local residents not to stay away and share information about the events of that day.
In late 2020, 31 years after the murder, the sisters and their cousins created the podcast “Forgotten Little Town” with all the data they were able to gather.
A few months later, in 2021, the prosecutor’s office resumed consideration of the case. According to prosecutors, the podcast is what “brought their attention to this case.”
“New leads have come to light and investigators continue to work diligently to find information that could lead to charges against the person responsible for Martin’s death.” said then-District Attorney Melissa Gillam.
The daughters initially believed that the man who was arrested in 1989 and later released had killed their father and escaped punishment. But then they talked to the locals and learned about his strained relationship with Wesley Paul Marler. A few weeks before the deadly fight, the two men had an altercation.
“They chased each other… They went through someone’s yard and ended up in a nearby street. It was this big bar fight…” Angela said.
The first suspect was a non-local resident who was visiting a neighboring family at the time. He told his daughters that he saw the fight and grabbed a piece of wood lying on the street. He swung it around trying to stop a fight and hit someone.
He later reported the incident to the police and told about the blow. The man was arrested despite the fact that his appearance did not match the description of the would-be killer.
In September 2024, police arrested a man suspected of attacking Jimmy Wade Martin, 69-year-old Wesley Paul Marler. According to the sisters, they have been waiting for such news for many years.

Although he has pleaded not guilty, Angela and Andrea are convinced that the evidence points to the involvement of Marler, who was at the tavern that night.
Talking to the locals, they learned that Marler had accused their father of having an affair with his wife. According to them, at that time their parents were in a difficult relationship and divorced.
The sisters hope that justice will prevail and they will finally learn the truth about what happened that fateful night. They believe their podcast played a big role in getting the case back on track.
