In Ukraine, 2 cases of measles in children were recorded – Ministry of Health

Two cases of measles in children from the same family have been recorded in Ukraine. One of them previously received the first dose of vaccination against the disease, the other was not vaccinated, the Ministry of Health reports. According to the doctors, the children are given all the necessary help, and those who came into contact with them (vaccinated earlier) underwent a PCR test to detect measles. The results were negative. All are under medical observation. Photo: Milkos/Depositphotos We remind you that the period when measles symptoms do not appear (incubation period) is 6-21 days. The main symptoms of the disease are: high fever, headache, runny nose, dry cough, enlargement of lymph nodes, mucous membrane of the eyes, diarrhea and vomiting. On the 4-5th day of the disease, a red rash appears. It starts from the scalp and face, and later spreads to the whole body. Illness with symptoms lasts four weeks or more. Measles is dangerous due to serious complications: pneumonia, otitis, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), can lead to disability and death. There is no cure for measles, but the disease can be prevented. Thanks to vaccination, it was possible to reduce the incidence of measles tenfold. According to the Ministry of Health, according to the data of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), from 2000 to 2016, mortality from measles decreased by 79%, therefore, vaccination saved 20.3 million children’s lives around the world. The vaccine against measles is included in the combined three-component vaccine of the PDA (for the prevention of measles, epidemic parotitis, rubella). “Therefore, we urge parents to take care of the protection of their children. There is a vaccine in Ukraine, it can be obtained from a pediatrician or a family doctor free of charge,” the Ministry of Health emphasizes.
