In Ukraine, a project to help children affected by the war was launched



In Ukraine, an initiative was launched to help children affected by the war. “We become stronger together!” – a new direction of the Swedish-Ukrainian DECIDE project, the goal of which is to create a safe psychological and physical space in the school and community. The project is designed not only for children, but also for their parents and teachers, and includes six main areas: training for educators on nonviolent communication, development of tolerance, integration of immigrant children; an educational campaign on the protection of children’s rights, as well as expert support for the monitoring system of the protection of children’s rights of the Supreme Commissioner for Human Rights; practical trainings according to the Israeli method for psychological first aid together with institutions of postgraduate pedagogical education; professional development of specialists of inclusive resource centers in the field of work with psychological trauma and nosologies caused by war; consultations and trainings for communities and educators on the topic of creating a safe educational space in educational institutions; consultative and advisory support for civil servants, heads and managers of territorial education regarding the creation of a safe community model. There are children who remain in the temporarily occupied territories and those who are directly on the conflict line. I know , that the government has introduced mandatory evacuation and we have repeatedly raised the issue of children who remain due to the will of adults in Bakhmut, in Velikonovosilivka, and in those cities that are being destroyed by the Russian Federation. We must not forget about those children who have currently left abroad , to keep in constant contact with them, so that after the end of the war they have the desire, and most importantly, the conditions to return to Ukraine,” emphasized the Commissioner for the Protection of Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets. It is expected that already in 2023, more than 50,000 educators, more than 200,000 children and their parents from almost 1,000 communities of Ukraine will be able to join it. As the ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets explained, it is extremely important for teachers, heads of educational institutions and communities to understand that the war had a psychological impact on children. According to DECIDE project manager Valentyna Poltorak, the initiative has already started, because training for trainers is being organized in institutions of postgraduate pedagogical education. “And they will also conduct trainings for fellow educators. Together with our partners, we are working for the future of every child in Ukraine,” she added during the presentation of the initiative. In addition, as part of the project, an educational program for teachers will be launched in Ukraine. MES together with DECIDE, territorial communities and education administrations to introduce nationwide trainings for educators. This is necessary in order to prevent, in particular, discrimination of students who are temporarily displaced persons and to take into account their educational needs. It should be noted that the Swiss-Ukrainian DECIDE project – “Decentralization for the development of democratic education” – is aimed at supporting two key reforms in Ukraine – education and decentralization.
