The woman filed a lawsuit against the Vinnytsia Military Medical Center of the Air Force of Ukraine, where she was operated on 18 years ago. The doctors “forgot” to get the surgical instrument and sewed it into the patient. She was to receive 900,000 compensation, according to the decision of the Vinnytsia Court of Appeal. But due to the hospital’s appeal, the court reduced the payment of 400,000 hryvnias, the “20 Minutes” publication reported with reference to the court’s press release, which was later deleted. The woman complained of pain in the left lumbar region, fatigue and shortness of breath while walking for a long time. But the tool was discovered in her body only in 2019, when the patient underwent a multispiral computer tomography. The patient notes that she has not had any other operations in her life. However, due to the deterioration of her health, the woman received the 3rd group of disability indefinitely. The plaintiff estimated the level of moral damage at 5 thousand hryvnias for the entire time – from February 22, 2005 (when the operation took place) to December 3, 2019 (when the tool was finally taken from her). In December 2022, the court in Vinnytsia decided to collect from the hospital almost UAH 4,000 for material damage, expenses for forensic medical examination and legal services – UAH 5,000 each, and 885,000 in compensation for moral damage. However, the Military Medical Center filed an appeal. Explaining that the monetary compensation is not commensurate. We remind you that medical errors can sometimes cost the lives of patients.
