In 2024, the participants of the national multi-subject test (NMT) received the highest average score for the German language exam. This year’s entrants did the worst with math tasks.

It shows report Ukrainian Center for the Evaluation of the Quality of Education (UCOYAO).

The calculations show that the participants who were tested from the German languagereceived the highest average score compared to the results for other subjects – 152 out of 200 possible.

Other indicators were also high foreign languages – this year’s entrants scored an average of 149.1 points in English, and 148.7 points in Spanish.

On the other hand, according to the organizers, the worst indicators were received by the participants mathematics – an average of only 132.5 points.

Tetyana Vakulenko, head of UTSOYAO notesthat the math data are “fairly indicative” since testing in this subject was mandatory for this year’s entrants.

“They can testify that studying mathematics in a distance format is quite difficult. Mathematics involves conscious and careful study, communication with the teacher and joint work, during which the teacher can immediately see a mistake and support the student.”– says the head of UTSOYAO.

In addition, according to her, the low test results in mathematics compared to other subjects confirm the conclusions of an international study PISA-2022.

The ranking of subjects based on the average score of all NMT participants looks like this:

  • German language – 152;
  • English language – 149.1;
  • Spanish language – 148.7;
  • French language – 148.6;
  • Ukrainian language – 146.8;
  • biology – 144.9;
  • history of Ukraine – 143.2;
  • geography – 143.1;
  • chemistry – 137.8;
  • Ukrainian literature – 136.6;
  • physics – 134.7;
  • mathematics – 132.5.

According to Vakulenko, the head of UTSOYAO, these indicators do not demonstrate the level of knowledge of school graduates or students of vocational education institutions who took part in NMT this year.

This is explained by the fact that the entrants chose the testing of some subjects independently, in addition, not all those registered appeared for the exam.

“I urge you to treat these results with caution, because the number of entrants who chose physics and chemistry is extremely small. When analyzing the average indicators, it should be understood that these are the results of participants who registered for the assessment and came.”– explains Tetyana Vakulenko.

According to UTSOYAO, the largest number of test participants chose English as an additional subject in 2024 (38.5%), the least – physics (2.8%) and chemistry (1.13%).

A small number of entrants who choose to take the science exam in recent years became an “unfortunate tradition”says Tetyana Vakulenko.

We will remind, according to the results of the experts’ assessment, 42% of Ukrainian teenagers do not have a basic level of literacy in mathematics. In general, the average score of 15-year-old students in this subject was 441 out of 1000 possible.

“This information is important for our teachers, because it is necessary to support our entrants and students in studying these subjects”she notes.

In general, this year in the national multi-subject testing more than 283 thousand Ukrainians took parta fifth (20.8%) of which are graduates of secondary education institutions of the past years.

Among the total number of participants, 50.2% were men, 49.8% were women.

We will remind, in 2024, participants of the NMT became more than 18,600 men between the ages of 25 and 60, which is almost six times more than before the full-scale invasion.
