Scientists have found that people who suffer from insomnia have a 69% higher risk of having a heart attack (myocardial infarction). Moreover, the potential link between insomnia and heart attack risk is strongest in women. A meta-analysis of relevant studies over 9 years was published in the scientific journal Clinical Cardiology, according to the American College of Cardiology (ACC). Study participants who slept 5 hours or less had the highest chance of having a heart attack. Specifically, those who slept 5 or less hours per night were almost twice as likely to have a heart attack as those who slept 6 or 7-8 hours per night. The authors of the study believe that sleep is one of the main recommendations for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
