Israel struck Beirut. The target was the commander of “Hezbollah”
The Israel Defense Forces struck the southern suburbs of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. The IDF said that the strike was “spot-on”. According to the Reuters agency with reference to Lebanese sources, the target of the attack was the commander of special operations of the radical Islamist group “Hezbollah” Ibrahim Akil. The group is recognized as terrorist in the USA and a number of other countries.
According to Lebanese mass media, an Israeli F-35 fighter jet fired two missiles, the target of which was a building in the Dahiya district. According to preliminary data from the Ministry of Health of Lebanon, three people died and 17 were injured as a result of the attack. It is also reported that rescuers are looking for missing people under the rubble after the collapse of two residential buildings.
According to The Israel Times with reference to the source, Ibrahim Akil died as a result of the strike. There is no confirmation of this information yet.
Ibrahim Akil is wanted by the United States: in the 1980s, he was one of the main members of the organization “Islamic Jihad” – the terrorist cell of “Hezbollah”, which took responsibility for the explosions of the US embassy in Beirut in April 1983 and for the explosions of the marine corps barracks USA in October 1983. The United States offered a reward of up to seven million dollars for information about him.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati accused Israel of “not giving importance to any humanitarian, legal or moral considerations”.
White House National Security Adviser John Kirby said that the US was not informed in advance about the IDF attack on Beirut. “I am not aware of any prior notification of these strikes,” Kirby said, adding that “this is not unusual.”
