Italy may block the sale of shares in the supplier company “Superjetov”

The Italian government may block the sale of a stake in Superjet International to its former manager with Italian citizenship. The State Property Agency assumes that the buyer may be a figurehead representing Russian interests. The newspaper Corriere della Sera writes about it.

Superjet International is a joint Italian-Russian enterprise engaged in the marketing of Sukhoi Superjet-100 aircraft on the international market and its adaptation for foreign buyers. After the February invasion of Ukraine and the introduction of EU sanctions against Moscow, the Italian Financial Guard blocked the company’s assets.

In the summer of 2022, the former consultant of the Italian co-owner of the company, businessman Vittorio Guidotti, bought 41 percent of its shares. In February 2023, the Russian side announced the sale of 49 percent to an investment fund from the UAE, the transaction must be approved by the Italian government.

As Corriere della Sera writes, consideration of the case on the sale of Guidotta’s shares is scheduled for the end of March in the Regional Administrative Court of Lazio. It is assumed that if the assets are unblocked, Superjet International will resume work and assemble aircraft for international buyers at sites in the UAE and Venice.

  • The civil aircraft Sukhoi Superjet-100 was developed by the Russian company “Grazhdanskie zhotony Sukhoi” with the participation of Western companies. Since 2011, the plane managed to find only two foreign customers, Mexican Interjet and Irish Cityjet. Both refused it due to problems with operation and repair.
  • Due to Western sanctions and the impossibility of using Western components from Russian aircraft manufacturers, the United Aircraft Corporation can no longer produce the Superjet-100. At the end of 2023, the UAC announced the certification of an import-substituted modification of the aircraft.
