Italian authorities were the first in the world to suspend access to the ChatGPT chatbot. The corresponding application is published on the website of the Italian National Authority for the Protection of Personal Data.
The regulator said that it temporarily prohibits the processing of data of Italian users by the American OpenAI, which developed and manages ChatGPT. The agency also launched an investigation into a possible breach of personal data protection by the company.
Italy has decided to block ChatGPT after the leak that OpenAI reported last week. The company said that they were forced to temporarily disable ChatGPT due to an error in the operation of the open source library. As a result, some users saw messages from other people who interacted with the chatbot.
Some personal data of users – including payment addresses and part of payment card data – were also publicly available. OpenAI assured that the leak affected a little more than 1% of users.
The statement of the Italian regulator also states that ChatGPT does not have an age filter, although the service is intended for people over 13 years old.
OpenAI has 20 days to respond to the restriction of the service by the Italian authorities. If OpenAI does not respond within the specified time, it faces a fine of up to 20 million euros.
