On March 6, a video of the shooting of a Ukrainian soldier captured by the Russians appeared on the Internet. Before the shooting, the Ukrainian fighter said “Glory to Ukraine!”. On March 12, the SBU established the identity of the soldier. He turned out to be a sniper of the 163rd battalion of the 119th separate brigade of the TRO of the Chernihiv region, Oleksandr Matsievskyi. The man was born on May 10, 1980 in Moldova, had the citizenship of this country. There he graduated from high school and electrical engineering college. Then the family returned to their homeland to Nizhyn. He was a very friendly, cheerful, good guy, a hardworking specialist,” – wrote the general director of VDNG Yevhen Mushkin after the employee’s death. “For Sashka, there were no empty authorities in life. To those whom he did not respect, he could easily indicate the way to follow the Russian ship,” Oleksandr’s colleague said. From the first day of the full-scale aggression of Russia, Matsievsky went to the Nizhyn Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support as a volunteer. At first, he helped build fortifications, waited at the checkpoint, prepared “Molotov cocktails” – bottles with an incendiary mixture. On March 11, he was enrolled in the Nizhyn Territorial Defense Battalion. Oleksandr Matsievskyi was appointed a sniper. On December 29, he called his mother for the last time and said that he would “never surrender.” Photo: SBU, the 67-year-old mother of fighter Paraska Demchuk admitted that she could not sleep after seeing the video with her son. “It’s difficult. I saw how my son died. And my son’s character: steadfast, indomitable. He could even say “Glory to Ukraine” at night,” the woman told Suspilno. According to Oleksandr’s brothers, on December 30, 2022, on the outskirts of Soledar, Matsievskyi and four other servicemen engaged in a counter-battle with the superior forces of the enemy during the movement. On the same day, at 12 o’clock, visual contact and communication with them disappeared. Since the end of December, Matsievsky was considered missing near Krasna Gora settlement in Donetsk region. On February 14, 2023, the soldier was buried in Nizhyn. “This is a real hero who, even facing death, demonstrated to the whole world what Ukrainian character and indomitability are. It is these defenders who are defending our land today, which means that the enemy will definitely be defeated. Because Ukraine’s great victory consists of heroic deeds such people as Oleksandr Matsievskyi. Glory to the hero! Glory to the heroes! Glory to Ukraine!” – wrote the head of the SBU, Vasyl Malyuk. Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded Oleksandr Matsievskyi the title of Hero of Ukraine posthumously.
