Kyiv was included in the list of 30 capitals of the world with the best indicators of the state of the atmospheric air in the annual global ranking of the IQAir World Air Quality Report. The capital of Ukraine took 26th place in the ranking, being between Madrid and Tokyo, reports the Kyiv City State Administration. “Kyiv took 26th place in the rating, having entered the so-called “green” zone. The capital of Ukraine also received a special distinction as a city that, despite the full-scale war, is developing an air monitoring system and making efforts to improve the ecological situation,” said the head of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources Oleksandr Vozniy of KMDA. At the same time, only 6 countries have reached WHO’s air quality recommendations: Australia, Estonia, Finland, Grenada, Iceland, New Zealand and Estonia. IQAir World Air Quality Report is an annual rating compiled by the international company IQAir since 2018. This year’s report presents air quality data for PM 2.5 from 7,323 cities around the world. The data used in the report were collected from more than 30,000 air quality monitoring stations, including from the city monitoring system of Kyiv. Thus, the capital of Ukraine entered the “green” zone of the list together with such cities as Washington (USA), Copenhagen (Denmark), Oslo (Norway) and others. In total, 116 capital cities were included in this year’s ranking of the IQAir World Air Quality Report. N’Djamena (Chad), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Baghdad (Iraq) were among the megacities with the most polluted air. San Juan (Puerto Rico), Hamilton (Bermuda) and Canberra (Australia) are on the list of cities with the cleanest air. And 118 (90%) of 131 countries exceeded the annual WHO norm for PM 2.5 of 5 μg/m3. 8 out of ten cities in the world with the worst air pollution are located in the Central and South Asian region. Africa remains the most underrepresented continent in the ranking, with only 19 out of 54 countries having sufficient air quality data. Lahore in Pakistan is the most polluted metropolis in 2022. In 2021, he took 15th place. The most polluted city in the USA was Coffeyville in the state of Kansas, and the most polluted large city in the USA was Columbus, Ohio. California is home to 10 of the 15 most polluted cities in the United States. At the same time, Las Vegas was recognized as the cleanest big city in the USA.
