Matviyenko became the head of the Federation Council for the fourth time
Valentina Matviyenko became the chairwoman of the Federation Council for the fourth time. The senators voted for it unanimously, Kommersant reports.
Other candidates, as in previous times, were not nominated. After the next appointment, Matviyenko thanked the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, saying that they are all in his team. Under Matviyenko, the Federation Council three times gave consent to the use of Russian armed forces in other countries: in Ukraine (2014 and 2022) and in Syria (2015).
Now Matviyenko is 75 years old. She has headed the Federation Council since 2011. In 2019, before the end of her second term, “Kommersant” wrote that she would not go to the third – the authors of the article were fired, followed by the entire political department of the newspaper.
Previously, Matviyenko was the governor of St. Petersburg, and in the 1990s, she was the ambassador to Malta and Greece. Matviyenko was born and raised in Ukraine, for supporting the Russian invasion, in which she is now under the sanctions of dozens of countries.
The senators elected Vladimir Yakushev, Acting Secretary of the General Council of United Russia, as Matviyenko’s deputy. The day before, he resigned from the post of presidential deputy in the Ural Federal District, which he had held since 2020.
