On May 19, the Government approved the mechanism of voluntary refusal of a scientific degree. The Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Oksen Lisovyi, said that he was the first to refuse the degree of candidate of sciences. “In the academic world, an academic degree is about value and trust, and also about getting, not receiving. Just as military uniforms are only allowed to be worn by military personnel, so only academics should have academic degrees, in my opinion… On my own, in fact, I was the first to try the refusal mechanism. I wrote the corresponding statement and as of yesterday I am no longer a candidate of sciences. I am not going to hold on to formal statuses for myself. Real affairs and actions are much more important,” the minister wrote on Facebook. Read also: Research recovery and more than one reform. What changes are expected from Lisovyi as the head of the Ministry of Education and Science Lisovyi added that the next step in establishing a new culture of academic integrity should be the corresponding law, which is currently being finalized. “Our task is to develop, support and strengthen progressive science and the people who are engaged in it – responsibly and effectively,” the minister writes. It will be recalled that earlier the newly appointed Minister of Education was accused of plagiarism. Oksen Lisovyi submitted his dissertation for review and promised to withdraw his degree if plagiarism was found.
