More deposits, less loans: Ukrainians are in no hurry to withdraw money from their accounts

As of May 2023, the volume of deposits of businesses and Ukrainians in Ukrainian banks is almost UAH 2 trillion — a third more than last year. The total volume of loans decreased by 8%. This is stated in Opendatabot data.

Deposits

As of May 2023, the total volume of deposits of businesses and citizens is almost UAH 2 trillion. This is 33% more than an hour ago, and almost half as much as at the beginning of May 2021.

The amount of deposits of companies and enterprises is 1.03 trillion. This is 44% more than at the beginning of May 2022, and almost 1.6 times more than on May 1, 2021.

Deposits of the corporate sector in foreign currency increased by 10% by April 2021. At the same time, business still trusts the national currency more: the share of hryvnia deposits is 67%.

The volume of Ukrainian deposits also increased. At the beginning of May of this year, the total amount of citizens’ deposits in banks amounted to UAH 942 billion. This is 36% more than as of May 2021.

Compared to the corresponding period last year, the volume of deposits of citizens in foreign currency increased by 9%, and by 2021 it slightly decreased – by 3%. At the same time, the share of deposits in the national currency also decreased. So far, it is 63%, while as of May 2022, the share of hryvnia deposits was 67%, and in the same period of 2021 – 61%.

Credits

After the surge in the number of loans last year (1,048 billion UAH), the total volume of loans decreased by 8%. However, this is only 1% less than in the corresponding period of 2021.

The majority of loans are for business — UAH 736 billion. The corporate sector prefers loans in national currency: their share is 68% of the total volume. For comparison, by the start of a full-scale war in 2021, this indicator was at the level of 59%.

Compared to last year, the amount of loans to citizens decreased significantly – by 17%. Ukrainians have now borrowed UAH 205 billion from banks. This is even less than it was in May 2021. Ukrainians mostly take hryvnia loans — their share is 94%.
