More than 130 members of the European Parliament signed a petition with the proposal to create a progressive tax on the incomes of the “super-rich”, which would operate at the supranational level, and the funds from it would be directed to investments for the “green transition” and social projects.

This is reported by AFP, writes “European Truth”.

The authors suggest a 1.5% tax on assets over EUR 50 million. “Our proposal is simple: establish a progressive tax on the assets of the super-rich at the international level to reduce inequality through their participation in financing the investments necessary for the ecological transition and social change”, – explained in a column in support of the petition, MEP Oror Lyaluk from the group “Socialists and Democrats” and economist Gabriel Zukman, who is also among the co-initiators.

They call on the European Union and international structures, such as the OECD and the UN, to consider this idea.

As an example, they cite the billionaire Elon Musk, as well as several hundred of the richest families in France, who paid 2-3% of their huge fortunes.

The deputies who signed the petition are mainly “green” and “left”, it is also signed by economists and public organizations.

It will be recalled that in the autumn of 2022, against the background of rapid inflation, Spain introduced a new tax on the rich with assets over 3 million eurosin order to receive additional funds for the social sphere.
