Moscow failed to replace foreign chips for SIM cards and credit cards

The Ministry of Industry and Trade is discussing the possibility of delaying the delivery of chips for Russian-made cards to banks for an hour. The Mikron plant that produces them cannot cope with production and began to receive claims from customers. The newspaper “Kommersant” writes about it.

As the publication writes, the plant has received claims for hundreds of millions of rubles from disgruntled customers. The publication reports that a bank card manufacturer is demanding 312 million rubles from a chip supplier for late deliveries.

The reason for the delay was interruptions in the supply of production materials and the high workload of the enterprise. A significant part of chips for cards in Russia was supplied from the European Union, which introduced unprecedented sanctions against Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine.

Against this background, manufacturers switched to Chinese chips. The Kommersant source says that against the background of the deficit, Chinese suppliers have raised the prices of their products three times in the first quarter of 2023, to $0.9 (approximately 72 rubles) per chip. It can still be twice as cheap as their Russian counterparts, the publication notes.
