OCU will appeal to the government to postpone the Day of Defenders

The Orthodox Church of Ukraine will appeal to the government to change the date of the public holiday. We are talking about the Day of Defenders, which is celebrated on the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God on October 14. But according to the New Julian calendar approved by the OCU, this holiday will fall on October 1. This was stated by Metropolitan Oleksandr of Pereyaslavskyi and Vishnevskyi in an interview with “Radio Svoboda” “It was my initiative to contact the relevant state authorities, in whose competence it is, about the settlement of this issue, according to the church calendar according to the new style, as we call it, according to of those holidays that are connected to it. And these are the Intercession and Statehood Day. In fact, these are only two holidays that we celebrate together with the state, which coincide with church holidays. And Christmas on December 25 – it was already declared a day off by the state “, Metropolitan Oleksandr noted. It will be recalled that in February the OCU announced that they would consider switching to the New Julian calendar. The final decision was to be announced in May. However, at the end of 2022, the OCU allowed parishioners to celebrate Christmas on December 25. Subsequently, Diya created a poll in which 44% voted for moving the Christmas celebration from January to the end of December. Read also: Can you go to church without a headscarf? OCU explains
