Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban intends to reduce the country’s dependence on Russian gas, reports Bloomberg. At the economic forum in Qatar, he announced that he was conducting negotiations with Qatar on gas supplies.

Orban clarified that Hungary currently receives approximately half of all gas from Russia via pipelines. Long-term contracts are concluded for these deliveries. However, the country is also looking for other partners. He emphasized the importance of Qatar for the European Union. “Without Qatari supplies, we would have been in trouble last winter,” Orbán said. According to him, gas deliveries from Qatar to Hungary can begin by 2026.

Orban also stated that Hungary intends to develop cooperation with Qatar in other areas, such as agriculture, the IT industry and security issues.

Hungary is one of the last European countries that maintains contacts with Moscow and its allies. On April 11, it extended the agreement with Moscow on additional gas supplies via “Turkish Stream”.

Budapest is accused by other EU countries of trying to block sanctions against Russia and sympathizing with Moscow. Orban’s government claims to be acting in the national interest.
