At the same time, the level of use of the Russian language decreased by almost 10%. “Such dynamics are a consequence of both the effect of symbolic refusal and, in part, the impossibility of conducting public opinion research in the occupied and front-line territories of the South and East,” sociologists say. However, sociologists emphasize that the practice of using languages is not limited to communication in the family or with close friends. “Most likely, a large part of those who noted Russian as the preferred language of communication at home use Ukrainian in the public sphere, when communicating with a Ukrainian-speaking interlocutor, etc.,” the researchers add. Differences in the language practice of residents of different types of settlements are preserved. In particular, in the cities of the south and east of Ukraine, the Russian language of everyday communication is still widespread, but the inhabitants of the towns and villages are mostly Ukrainian-speaking. This is especially common in the south and east of the country, where almost 40% of Ukrainians, who consider Ukrainian their native language, mostly communicate in Russian at home. The survey was conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation together with the sociological service of the Razumkov Center with the support of the MATRA program from December 13 to 21, 2022. 2018 respondents over the age of 18 took part in it. The theoretical sampling error does not exceed 2.3%. At the same time, additional systematic deviations of the sample may be caused by the consequences of Russian aggression, in particular, the forced evacuation of millions of citizens.
