“The state of surprise, uncertainty and loss intensifies family conflicts… The tape, made in an ascetic form, touches on the most difficult topics of our time – war, migration – leaving the viewer with the feeling that each of us can be under a volcano that is waking up… Unresolved conflicts come to the surface , and the fear that family members feel is mixed with guilt“, the Oscar Committee of Poland notes.
Next week, the film “Under the Volcano” will open the 49th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia.
What film did Ukraine choose?
At its meeting on September 9, the Ukrainian Oscar Committee chose the film that will represent Ukraine at the 2025 Oscars. It was Philip Sotnichenko’s post-Soviet noir “La Palisade”.
In addition to “La Palisade”, three more films were included in the national selection: “House “Slovo”. An endless novel” Taras Tomenko, “We were recruits” Lubomyr Levytskyi and “Peaceful People” Oksana Karpovych.
Sotnichenko’s tape tells about a forensic psychiatrist who has to take part in the investigation of the murder of a policeman. The law enforcement officers are in a hurry to close the case before the death penalty is abolished, but the doctor is not sure of the defendant’s jurisdiction. The events take place in 1996, a few months before the signing of Protocol No. 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which provided for the abolition of the death penalty.
