Potatoes began to be imported into Ukraine at the height of the harvest

In September 2024, Ukraine started importing potatoes from Poland and Lithuania.

About this informs EastFruit.

According to official statistics, from September 1 to 23, 2024, the country has already received three truckloads of potatoes: 22 tons from Lithuania, worth $10.56 thousand, and 42 tons from Poland, worth $20.164 thousand.

According to the State Customs Service (SSC), in the period from January to August 2024, Ukraine imported 15,000 tons of potatoes. During this period, the export of potatoes amounted to only 760 tons worth $215,000, while the import was 15,356,000 tons worth $9,324 million.

According to analysts of the EastFruit project, potato imports have started due to increased demand for food potatoes among local wholesale companies and retail chains, as well as speculation about a potential shortage of quality potatoes in the current season.

“Potato prices are actively growing due to the high demand for food potatoes, which is further fueled by rumors about the shortage of quality potatoes in the current season,” the report said.

A poor harvest in 2024 also contributed to higher prices and increased demand for potato imports. EastFruit experts note that the main reasons for the import of potatoes were the increase in demand due to the needs of the army, population migration, as well as the reduction of local production in Ukraine.

EastFruit also noted that a shortage of domestic production and high demand for potatoes contributed to a significant increase in imports.

We will remind:

The fields of horticulture, vegetable growing and potato growing are of critical importance today and should have the possibility of reservation.
