Putin ordered to sign a partnership agreement with Iran
The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, approved the proposal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia regarding the signing of an agreement with Iran on a comprehensive strategic partnership with Iran. On Wednesday, the corresponding order of the Russian president was published. It says that Putin considers it expedient to sign such an agreement at the highest level. At the same time, the text of the draft agreement has not been published.
The order containing exactly the same wording – only with the mention of the DPRK instead of Iran – was published before the recent visit of Vladimir Putin to Pyongyang. During this visit, Putin and the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, signed an agreement on a comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, which, among other things, provides for the obligation to provide assistance, including armed assistance, in the event of an attack by a third country on one of the contracting parties – that is, Moscow and Pyongyang essentially formed a military alliance. At the same time, Putin asserted that North Korean soldiers will not go to war with Ukraine.
It is not known whether the agreement with Iran contains a similar clause on military assistance. Iran is in hostile relations with Israel, supporting various armed groups fighting against the Jewish state.
In June, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Andrey Rudenko stated that the Russian and Iranian delegations managed to agree on the final text of the draft agreement during consultations held in Moscow on June 21. The date of his signature was not mentioned then. On Wednesday, the Iranian agency Tasnim reported that the agreement could be signed in October during the visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Russia.
- North Korea openly supports Russia in the war with Ukraine and, according to numerous reports, supplies Moscow with weapons and ammunition (Pyongyang has not officially confirmed this). Iran declares its neutrality in the war and denies supplying weapons to Russia. At the same time, it is known that Russia uses Iranian Shahed drones in the war, and in recent days Western countries have officially announced that, according to their data, Tehran recently delivered ballistic missiles to Moscow. There has been no evidence of the use of these missiles against Ukraine yet.
