Resident of Petrozavodsk received three years probation for “fakes”

The Second Western District Military Court sentenced a 55-year-old resident of Petrozavodsk, Elena Shchelupanova, to three years of conditional imprisonment. This was reported by the “OVD-Info” project on Tuesday with reference to the press service of the court.

Shchelupanova was found guilty of the articles on spreading so-called “fakes” about the Russian army for political reasons and on public calls for terrorism. In addition to the conditional term, she was also fined 360,000 rubles and banned from administering Internet resources for three years.

The criminal case against the Petrozavodsk resident became known in January. It is not known what became the reason for the persecution, notes Sever.Realii. In September 2022, Shchelupanova was included in the “list of terrorists and extremists of Rosfinmonitoring”.

Elena Shchelupanova is a participant in actions in support of the story of Yuriy Dmitriev, who was sentenced to 13 years on charges of violent acts against his adopted daughter. In April 2021, she was arrested for five days for reposting a publication about actions in support of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

  • Articles about “discrediting” and “fakes” appeared in the Russian legislature in March 2022. In eight months, 4,800 administrative cases of “discredit” were filed in Russian courts, and the amount of fines for the first six months amounted to almost 86 million rubles. Since the beginning of March, 149 criminal cases have been initiated.
  • The head of the human rights group “Agora” Pavel Chikov reported that a third of the defendants in these cases have left Russia – they are wanted and their property is being seized. The Russian authorities call any information different from the version of the Ministry of Defense of Russia “fakes”.
