Japanese researchers have tried to genetically modify chickens to produce eggs that do not cause allergies. Scientists decided to investigate how to change the genetics of chickens to make life easier for people with allergies. They focused on the study of the ovomucoid protein, which is the cause of many types of egg allergy. It turned out that chickens with altered genes can hatch eggs without ovumocoid. The study used transcription activator-like activator effector nucleases (TALENs), which are proteins that help modify DNA. Scientists deleted the ovomucoid gene from two breeds of chickens and tested the resulting eggs for safety. It turned out that the eggs of genetically modified chickens did not contain ovomucoid or its mutations. Another scientist Blaine Tesfu, who was not involved in the experiment, commented in Medical News Today that the new study could significantly help people with egg allergies. “By breeding chickens without OVM, people will be able to consume eggs and products derived from eggs without fear of an allergic reaction .
