The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine’s Committee on Education, Science and Innovation, Serhiy Babak, officially renounced the scientific degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences. He became the second person, after Education Minister Oksen Lisovoy, to refuse a degree after allegations of plagiarism. Serhii Babak announced his decision on the Telegram channel. “Formalized scientific degrees are often a “necessary accessory” and do not reflect the inner essence of a scientist. A scientist is primarily determined by the quality, citation of scientific works and implemented scientific developments, not a formalized diploma. About a month ago, I submitted the text of my doctoral dissertation for review . And yes, several examinations showed that there are partial coincidences of the text with other works. Although they can all be explained, formally this is a violation. And because our task is to form a new culture of academic integrity, we will abandon the old one. And it is necessary start with yourself,” Babak wrote. Serhiy Babak Previously, the Government approved a mechanism for voluntary refusal of a scientific degree – Lisovyi and Babak fulfilled their promise to refuse the degree if plagiarism was found in their dissertations. “Our country is now fighting for its future, rejecting all the old things that pulled it back, so to speak, purifying itself. We are doing the same. The next step is the law “On academic integrity”, which is currently at the stage of discussion and finalization. By joint efforts let’s clean up in this area as well,” Babak adds. It will be recalled that Serhiy Babak was previously accused of academic dishonesty and called the “plagiarist of the year” in 2019. Oksen Lisovy and Serhiy Babak jointly submitted their dissertations for plagiarism verification to the National Agency for Quality Assurance of Higher Education.
