Bird Photographer of the Year Photo Award announced this year’s contest winners, who were chosen from among the authors of over 23,000 images.

The victory was won by photojournalist Patricia Gomonillo, who photographed 4,000 dead birds that died as a result of collisions with windows in Toronto (Canada).

Her photo also won first place in category “Savings”which is designed to tell about efforts to protect a certain species.

The author of the winning photo was trying to draw attention to the mass death of birds, who often confuse reflective surfaces, such as windows, with the continuation of the landscape. Therefore, animals can crash into the glass at full speed and die.

“Over one billion birds die every year in North America alone from window collisions. I’m a conservation photojournalist working with the Fatal Light Awareness Program, where we rescue window collision survivors in Toronto.

Unfortunately, most of the birds we find are already dead. They are collected and at the end of the year we create this spectacular display to honor the lives lost and raise public awareness.”– Patricia Gomonilo told about her work.

In the category “The best portfolio” the Hungarian Bense Mate, who presented pictures of local birds at the competition, won the championship. In addition, he supplemented the photos with the creative use of the latest technologies.

“Curiosity, harmony, struggle for survival and incredible moments are all part of the natural world, and I always enjoy watching these intimate and intense events in nature.

I created this portfolio of native waterfowl to tell their stories and highlight moments in their lives.”Mate shared.

“In an increasingly urbanized world, many birds are forced to live on people’s doorsteps. This category explores the world of urban bird photography.”– noted on the website of the competition.
