Andrei Rublev’s “Trinity” icon cannot be taken out of the Tretyakov Gallery on June 4 due to its complicated and unstable condition. This was the conclusion reached by the participants of the meeting at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. They discussed the possibility of transferring the icon of the Russian Orthodox Church.

On May 15, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, issued an order to transfer the “Trinity” from the Tretyakov Gallery to the Trinity Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra.

In July 2022, the Tretyakov Gallery handed over the icon of the Russian Orthodox Church for several days to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the discovery of the relics of St. Sergius of Radonezh.

Then the museum community strongly opposed it, gallery employees, researchers and restorers were afraid that moving and changing the storage conditions of the icon would damage it. It was claimed that when the work was returned, 61 damages were found on it.

Today’s state of the icon is assessed by experts as difficult and unstable, writes the “Fontanka” publication, which reviewed the minutes of the meeting of the restoration council of the Tretyakov Gallery with the participation of representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Archpriest Leonid Kalinin, representative of the Moscow Patriarchate for church art, noted in a conversation with “Interfax” that the Russian Orthodox Church understands the conclusions of specialists.

The priest admitted that, if Patriarch Kirill deems it necessary, on June 4, one of the miraculous lists of the Rublev Trinity will be temporarily displayed in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. According to the archpriest, the icon itself will be transferred to the Trinity Cathedral of the Lavra when a special kiosk will be prepared for it.

  • Andrei Rublev created the “Trinity” in the 15th century. The icon is considered the most famous work of the ego. Until 1929, the icon was in the Trinity Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra, and then it entered the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery.
