The Russian court in Simferopol has sentenced a 40-year-old resident of St. Petersburg to six years in a strict regime prison, who tried to swim from the annexed Crimea to Odessa. It is confirmed that he planned to join the Ukrainian army. This was reported by TASS.

The name of the convicted person is not known, many details of the case are classified. The verdict states that the St. Petersburg native contacted a representative of one of the volunteer military units in Ukraine that recruited Russian citizens. At first, he unsuccessfully tried to cross the border in the Bryansk region. After that, he arrived in Krym, bought a wetsuit and an underwater flashlight.

On August 6, he went swimming to Odessa from an unnamed area. A day later, on August 8, he was discovered by a border ship in the area of ​​Olenyovka, a village in the westernmost part of Crimea. The St. Petersburg native had about 180 kilometers to sail. The court found him guilty of high treason and illegal border crossing.
